Media Buying

Media Buying

Media buying is the process of negotiating, purchasing, and managing advertising placements across paid channels based on a media plan's specifications. Where media planning determines the strategy behind where and how a budget should be spent, media buying executes that strategy, handling the actual transactions with publishers, platforms, and networks to secure the ad inventory a campaign needs. A media buyer works within the parameters a plan sets, such as target audience, budget, and channel mix, but is responsible for the specific negotiations and operational decisions that turn that plan into live placements.

Types Of Media Buying

  • Direct buying - negotiating placements directly with a publisher or platform's sales team, often used for premium inventory or custom placements

  • Programmatic buying - purchasing ad inventory through automated, algorithm-driven auctions, typically in real time across a network of available placements

  • Private marketplace (PMP) buying - programmatic buying restricted to a curated set of publishers, combining automation with more control over where ads appear

  • Upfront buying - securing inventory in advance of a broadcast season or platform's release, common in television and streaming media

Core Components Of A Media Buy

  • Inventory - the specific ad space or placement being purchased, such as a display unit, a video pre-roll slot, or a search results position

  • Pricing model - the basis on which cost is calculated, such as cost per thousand impressions (CPM), cost per click (CPC), or cost per acquisition (CPA)

  • Targeting parameters - the audience criteria applied to the buy, such as demographics, location, interests, or behavioral data

  • Flight dates - the specific start and end dates the purchased inventory will run

  • Frequency caps - limits set on how many times a single user can be shown the same ad within a given period

Media Buying Vs Media Planning

Media planning defines the strategic parameters a campaign needs, including audience, channel mix, budget allocation, and scheduling. Media buying executes within those parameters, handling the negotiation and purchase of the actual inventory that fulfills the plan. A plan might call for a specific volume of impressions on a defined set of platforms within a set budget; buying is the process of securing that inventory at the best available terms and managing it once it goes live.

Responsibilities Within Media Buying

  • Negotiating rates and terms with publishers, platforms, or ad networks

  • Setting up and managing campaigns within demand-side platforms or direct ad servers

  • Monitoring live placements for delivery, pacing, and performance against targets

  • Adjusting bids, budgets, or targeting parameters during a campaign to improve results

  • Verifying that purchased inventory was delivered as agreed, including checks for viewability and fraud
