Newsletter

A newsletter is a recurring email sent to a list of subscribers, built to deliver consistent value, such as updates, insights, or offers, directly to an audience that has explicitly opted in to receive it. It differs from a one-off promotional email in that it follows a regular publishing cadence and typically maintains a consistent format and purpose issue after issue, which lets subscribers know what to expect and builds a habitual reason to open it. A newsletter is owned media in the fullest sense, since a brand controls the list, the content, and the delivery schedule without depending on a third-party platform's algorithm to reach its audience.

Types Of Newsletters

  • Content or editorial newsletters - deliver curated information, commentary, or original writing on a topic relevant to the audience

  • Promotional newsletters - center on offers, discounts, or product announcements built to drive a direct transaction

  • Company or product update newsletters - keep an existing customer base informed about changes, releases, or milestones

  • Curated roundup newsletters - aggregate links or summaries of relevant external content rather than original writing

  • Community or membership newsletters - built for a specific subscriber base, often tied to a paid membership or community

Core Components Of A Newsletter

  • Subject line - the first and most consequential line of copy, since it determines whether a subscriber opens the email at all

  • Preheader text - the short preview text shown alongside the subject line in most inboxes, offering a second chance to earn the open

  • Body content - the main content of the issue, structured for scanning rather than dense, uninterrupted paragraphs

  • Call to action - the specific action the newsletter wants a reader to take, such as reading an article, checking an offer, or replying

  • Footer - required elements including an unsubscribe link and sender identification, both necessary for compliance with email marketing regulations

Newsletter Vs Email Campaign

A newsletter and a broader email campaign are related but not identical. An email campaign is typically a short, defined series of emails built around a specific goal, such as promoting a product launch or nurturing a lead toward a purchase, and it ends once that goal is met. A newsletter is an ongoing, recurring publication without a fixed end point, built to maintain a relationship with subscribers over time rather than push toward a single conversion event. Many brands run both, using a standing newsletter to sustain audience relationships while layering campaigns on top for specific initiatives.

Measuring Newsletter Performance

  • Open rate - the percentage of recipients who open a given issue, largely influenced by subject line and sender reputation

  • Click-through rate - the percentage of recipients who click a link within the newsletter

  • List growth rate - the rate at which new subscribers join relative to the existing list size

  • Unsubscribe rate - the percentage of recipients who opt out after a given issue, often signaling a mismatch between content and subscriber expectations
