Product Branding

Product Branding

Product branding is the process of giving an individual product its own distinct identity, including its name, packaging, visual design, and positioning, separate from or in addition to the identity of the company that makes it. It applies branding principles at the level of a single product rather than the business as a whole, which allows a company to give each product its own personality, target its own specific audience, and occupy its own position in the market, even when several products are sold by the same parent company.

Product branding differs from corporate branding in scope. Corporate branding builds recognition and trust around the company itself, applied consistently across everything that company sells. Product branding builds recognition and trust around one specific offering, which can be positioned entirely differently from other products the same company makes, including in cases where the connection to the parent company is intentionally understated.

Core Components Of Product Branding

  • Product name - the specific name given to the product, which may or may not carry the parent brand's name

  • Packaging design - the visual design of the physical or digital packaging a product is presented in

  • Visual identity - a distinct color palette, logo, or design language specific to the product, which may differ from the parent company's core identity

  • Positioning - the specific market position and target audience the product is built around, distinct from other products in the same portfolio

  • Product messaging - the specific claims, benefits, and tone used to communicate what the product does and why it matters

Branding Strategies For Products

  • Branded house - every product carries the parent company's name and identity directly, so brand equity transfers clearly between the company and its products

  • House of brands - each product operates under its own distinct brand name, with little to no visible connection to the parent company

  • Sub-branding - a product carries its own distinct name while still being visibly associated with the parent brand, combining elements of both approaches

  • Endorsed branding - a product has its own identity but is explicitly endorsed by the parent brand, often through a "by" or "from" credit line

Product Branding Vs Corporate Branding

Corporate branding is built to create trust and recognition around a company as a whole, and it applies uniformly across every product that company offers, regardless of category or audience. Product branding is built to differentiate one specific offering, sometimes from competitors, and sometimes from other products made by the same company. A single company can run both simultaneously, using a strong corporate brand to lend credibility across its portfolio while giving each product its own distinct identity suited to its specific audience.
