Reach
Reach is the total number of unique individuals exposed to a piece of content, advertisement, or campaign within a defined period. It counts people, not exposures, which is what separates it from impressions, a related metric that counts every instance a piece of content is displayed, including multiple views by the same person. A campaign delivering 100,000 impressions could reach anywhere from a few thousand people seeing it repeatedly to close to 100,000 individuals seeing it once, and reach is the metric that specifies which of those scenarios actually occurred.
Reach Vs Impressions
Reach and impressions are frequently confused because both describe how many times content was shown, but they answer different questions. Impressions measure total volume of display, counting every instance regardless of who saw it or how many times. Reach measures the breadth of an audience, counting each unique person once regardless of how many times they were shown the content. A campaign optimized purely for impressions can end up showing the same ad repeatedly to a narrow audience, while a campaign optimized for reach spreads exposure across a wider set of individuals.
Reach Vs Frequency
Reach and frequency are typically reported together, since one describes how many people were exposed and the other describes how many times each of them was exposed on average. Frequency is calculated by dividing total impressions by total reach, producing an average number of exposures per person. A campaign with high reach and low frequency spreads a message thin across many people, while a campaign with lower reach and higher frequency concentrates repeated exposure on a smaller group, and the right balance between the two depends on the campaign's objective.
Types Of Reach
Organic reach - the number of unique people who see content without paid promotion, typically through a platform's algorithm or a follower's own feed
Paid reach - the number of unique people exposed to content through paid placements or advertising
Total reach - the combined, deduplicated count of people reached through both organic and paid activity, avoiding double-counting individuals exposed through both
Why Reach Matters
Reach is most relevant to objectives centered on awareness, since a message has to reach a person before any other marketing outcome, such as consideration or conversion, becomes possible. A campaign built to introduce a brand to a new audience is typically evaluated on reach first, since the goal is breadth of exposure rather than repeated engagement with an audience that already knows the brand. Reach becomes less central to campaigns built around direct conversion, where frequency and targeting precision toward a smaller, higher-intent audience often matter more than maximizing the number of unique people exposed.
