Search Advertising

Search advertising is a form of paid advertising in which ads appear on a search engine's results page in response to a specific query, typically bought through an auction where advertisers bid on the keywords they want their ads to appear for. It differs from most other advertising formats in that it targets active intent rather than interrupting passive browsing, since a person searching a keyword has already stated what they are looking for, which is why search ads are generally evaluated on direct response metrics rather than broader awareness metrics.

Search ads are priced primarily on a cost-per-click basis, meaning an advertiser pays only when someone clicks the ad rather than each time it is shown. Ad position and cost are determined by Ad Rank, a combination of an advertiser's bid amount and Quality Score, the platform's estimate of how relevant the ad and its landing page are to the keyword being bid on. This means the highest bidder does not automatically win the top position, since a lower bid paired with a highly relevant ad and landing page can outrank a higher bid tied to weaker relevance.

Core Components of a Search Ad

  • Headline - the primary line of text a searcher sees, typically required to closely match the keyword's intent

  • Description - supporting text expanding on the offer, benefit, or differentiator behind the headline

  • Display URL - the visible web address shown with the ad, which can reinforce relevance or trust

  • Final URL - the actual landing page the click leads to, which does not need to match the display URL exactly

  • Ad extensions - additional information attached to an ad, such as site links, callouts, or phone numbers, that can improve visibility and click-through rate

Match Types

  • Broad match - shows an ad for searches related to a keyword's meaning, including variations, synonyms, and related terms

  • Phrase match - shows an ad for searches that include the meaning of the keyword phrase, in a similar word order

  • Exact match - shows an ad only for searches that closely match the specific keyword's meaning, offering the tightest targeting

Search Advertising Vs Search Engine Optimization

Search advertising and search engine optimization both aim for visibility on a search results page, but they differ in mechanism and timeline. Search advertising secures placement immediately through a paid bid, with visibility stopping the moment budget or bidding stops. Search engine optimization earns placement through organic ranking factors built over time, without a direct per-click cost, but typically requiring a longer period before meaningful visibility is achieved. Many campaigns run both together, using search advertising for immediate visibility on priority keywords while organic efforts build toward longer-term ranking.

Measuring Search Advertising Performance

  • Click-through rate - the percentage of ad impressions that result in a click

  • Cost per click - the amount paid each time the ad is clicked

  • Conversion rate - the percentage of clicks that result in a completed desired action

  • Quality Score - the platform's relevance rating, which directly affects both cost per click and ad position
